The shape of things to come
While back in Dalaran, with Icecrown Citadel behind us, we thought we had reached the end of our journeys in Northrend. However, word reached us from Krasus that something had occured at Wyrmrest Temple. The Ruby Sanctum within the Chamber of Aspects had been invaded by an unknown force. The black dragonflight, thought to be the likeliest suspects, didn't have a strong enough force in the region to pull off such a brazen act. It was left to us to investigate inside the Sanctum.

Sure enough, it was the black dragonflight, or at least a faction of them, that had perpetrated the attack. Black wyrmkin were everywhere, surrounded by banners with an unfamiliar crest on them - a hammer set against a disc with dragon wings along the sides. After fighting through some of the invaders, we found the Sanctum's guardian, Xerestrasza. She told us that they had appeared out of thin air in a surprise attack, and their focus was on the red dragon eggs stored in the Sanctum. Three lieutenants led the fight, but the commander was a full-grown Twilight dragon named Halion. Xerestrasza tasked us with defeating the invaders and reporting back to Krasus.

The first lieutenant was Baltharus the Warborn, a drakonid warrior. His main tactic was to place a debuff on his victims that decreased their damage and increased his own, coupled with a whirlwind attack. After he was defeated, we fought Saviana Ragefire, a black drake. She frequently used Conflagrate on her victims from the air. Then came General Zarithrian, a wyrmkin commander. He would use a fear spell to hold his enemies in place and summoned adds.

Finally, only Halion remained. He turned to us and caused a ring of fire to surround the chamber, trapping us. The dragon fought like others, with cleaving and tail-swiping. He also summoned a fireball that would strike the ground, creating streaks of flame that would travel in four directions. A debuff would also be present, causing a patch of fire to appear under the victim when dispelled. After suffering some damage, Halion cast a spell and entered a twilight realm, but a portal was created that allowed us to follow him. Inside, his fire-infection ability became shadow damage instead, and he also summoned two orbs that would form a beam between the two, which would kill anyone that got hit by it. By keeping ahead of the beam's circular path, no one would be hurt.

After taking more damage, Halion phased into both realms simultaneously. He was linked to each one, and causing more damage in one made him stronger in the other. Only by doing an equal amount of damage in each realm would he be able to be destroyed. As this stage of the fight began, we learned the shocking truth behind the purpose of this invasion; Halion served Deathwing, the corrupted Aspect and true leader of the Black Dragonflight. When Halion was at last defeated, he warned us that a new age of chaos was coming with his master's return to Azeroth.

Shadowmourne & the legacy of Arthas Menethil
While the world celebrated the defeat of the Lich King, it also mourned the losses suffered at his hands and the dark legacy he left behind. The evil master of one of the greatest armies Azeroth had ever known had been many things in his lifetime; a soldier, a student, a disciple, a lover, and a mass murderer. Each step along his path had caused unending grief to those he once cared for most, and each one of these people helped in his ultimate downfall. Their grief was eventually put to rest by a simple box of trinkets: the last pieces of the life he surrendered to the darkness long ago.

This story began awhile back, however. Highlord Darion Mograine of the Knights of the Ebon Blade had a plan; build a weapon of incredible power to rival that of Frostmourne. This weapon would be forged with the energies of the Light as well as darkness, using power taken from the Lich King's greatest lieutenants within Icecrown Citadel. It would be dangerous, and take great time and effort, but I volunteered.

The first step was to find Light's Vengeance, the warhammer that Arthas discarded in the cavern where he took up Frostmourne. I found the dais where the weapon was kept, but the Lich King was waiting for me; he summoned a vargul sorcerer and an army of ghouls before leaving. I fought my way to the hammer and when touched it flew into the air and rained down bolts of holy energy that destroyed the undead. The sorcerer came back as a skeleton but when it was destroyed, I was able to take Light's Vengeance.

The blade of the weapon was crafted from primordial saronite, and then it was embossed with the blood of Festergut & Rotface, the twin abominations, after we slayed them. Darion put all the items into his runeforge and created Shadow's Edge, a two-handed axe. For it to achieve it's full potential though, more would have to be done. Shadow's Edge needed to be infused with 1000 lost souls, taken from the minions of the Scourge. Every soul added made the blade feel heavier, bristling with dark energy.

The next task was to use Shadow's Edge as we defeated the masters of each wing in Icecrown Citadel. I drank the slime in Putricide's chamber to infuse it with unholy power; became a vampire and infected three of my comrades during the fight with the Blood Queen to give the axe blood power; and used it to absorb three of Sindragosa's deadly breaths to give it frost power. The blade hummed with dark energy by then, but the final task would prove daunting; shards of the Frozen Throne, created when Arthas shattered it to release the Lich King's spirit, were scattered across the Citadel and only by collecting fifty pieces could the weapon be completed.

As we battled across the Citadel we eventually collected all the shards. Darion took the axe and the shards and put them into his runeforge. He then removed the finished product - Shadowmourne, created from the powers of the Scourge to be used against them. As we left to go face the Lich King in the final confrontation, Darion left me with a warning: like Frostmourne, the weapon I carried would constantly seek to corrupt its wielder, and if my fortitude and faith in the Light wavered, I might be lost to the darkness as Arthas was.

After the battle with the Lich King, a metal box was found. We took it back to Darion and found it full of old momentos from Arthas's human life. Uther's spirit appeared again long enough to accept his former protege's badge of the Silver Hand, and leaving him with the memory of the young paladin he once knew. Sylvanas took a vial of her own blood, taken by Arthas as a trophy when he stole her life. Her revenge completed, she was left to ponder her place in the world and the future of the Forsaken.

Jaina was shocked to find Arthas had kept a locket she gave him with her picture inside. It was proof that whatever humanity was left in him had still loved her all those years, and she wished his soul peace. Presented with the training sword the Prince used as a boy, Muradin remembered fondly when he gave it to him and taught him the ways of combat. He still regretted ever finding Frostmourne, but he wished his adoptive brother a fond farewell. Finally, Darion was presented with a soul shard that contained the spirit of his father, Alexandros, the Ashbringer. The Highlord's ghost told the tale of his imprisonment and torture within Frostmourne, and how his son's sacrifice of his own humanity is what kept him going all that time. Seeing his son become a hero despite falling to the darkness, his soul could finally rest.

As for me, I had sought and found justice in the Light's name: for my elven friends who were nearly wiped out by genocide; for my sacred Order, which was destroyed by its greatest son; for the brother of my king, who unwittingly helped Arthas become a monster; for my father, who was killed on the battlefields of Northrend after Arthas's betrayal; and for myself, to put my past to rest so I could face the future with a renewed hope.

The Lich King's Last Stand
The campaign against the Scourge had brought the heroes of all Azeroth to the shores of Northrend. Ancient ruins had been discovered, new enemies overcome...and countless lives lost. From the hills of the Howling Fjord where the Vrykul were re-awakened, to the Naxxanar necropolis where the Cult of the Damned played their hand, to the ruins of Zul'Drak where an entire civilization was wiped out by their own fear of the undead, there has been one constant - the Lich King, holding every corner of his empire within his icy grip.

Time after time, he suffered setbacks. From Light's Hope Chapel to Azjol-Nerub to Naxxramas to the grounds of the Argent Tournament and into the very heart of Icecrown Citadel, the Lich King had failed to stop the onslaught of a world united against him. And now, under the direction of the Ashen Verdict, the lord of the Scourge had come to face his final challenge.

After teleporting far up to the top of Icecrown, we found ourselves facing the Frozen Throne. Tirion Fordring, Ashbringer in hand, was facing down the Lich King as he sat triumphantly. The barely-living husk of Bolvar Fordragon was held in chains above him, a dark trophy in defiance of the Light. Tirion walked forward, and gave his foe one last chance to surrender, an idea that merely amused him. Realizing words were futile, Tirion charged forward.

The Lich King froze him in a solid block of ice, then turned his attention toward us. He started his attack by summoning ghouls and large varguls and caused a rampant plague to infect one of us; each time it was cured it would jump to someone new, causing the Lich King to gain more strength. However, by making the plague jump into his own undead minions, we turned his weapon against him. Next, the Lich King moved to the center of the platform and began to channel a hurricane of frost power that spread in every direction. It did not extend to the far edges of the platform, however, and there we found safety. While that occured, he sent out streams of shadow energy from Frostmourne and conjured orbs of frost that moved toward us. He also used his power to draw out a raging spirit from one of our raiders that had to be dealt with.

Eventually the storm ceased, but he then smashed Frostmourne into the ground and caused the edge of the platform to break away giving us moments to run into the center. As we dealt with the Lich King again, he suddenly called valkyrs down to aid him, three of them grabbing victims and dragging them toward the edge to drop them off. On top of that, he caused a vortex of dark magic to coalesce underneath someone at random and if anyone touched it, it would grow in size. We destroyed the valkyrs and managed the vortexes carefully, doing damage to the Lich King when we could. After one more round of his frost storm ability, he began to summon spirits in the air that would explode if they touched ground.

The battle raged on and victory seemed likely, but the Lich King would not be robbed of his greatest weapon - us. In an instant, every last one of us was killed, dropping dead where we stood. Only then did we realize, this was the Lich King's plan all along; every setback he had suffered, every challenge we met and overcame before Northrend and throughout it, was all one long test of our strength, our determination, and our tenacity. The Lich King was satisfied that he had found the instruments of his new campaign against the world of the living, and he would raise us from the dead to serve him.

It was then that Tirion was released from his icy prison. Seeing his champions dead, with the Lich King's triumph nigh, he called out one last prayer to the Light. Using its strength, he lept forward and used the Ashbringer to smash Frostmourne to pieces. The souls trapped within the blade were released; angry, vengeful spirits led by none other than Terenas Menethil, Arthas's father. The souls swirled around the Lich King, pulling him into the air where he was held, powerless, while we were resurrected by Terenas to finish our task. The Lich King was defeated and he fell to the ground, his helmet flying off and with it, the malevolent entity held within.

Only Arthas remained, a mortal man once again and as such, subject to the laws of mortality. As he lay dying, the ghost of his father tried to comfort him, telling him he would at long last be at peace...but Arthas only saw darkness before him as he passed away. Terenas laid his son down and turned to Tirion, reminding him of Uther's words - the Scourge needed to be controlled, that there always had to be a Lich King. The paladin picked up the helmet that held the Lich King's spirit within, ready to take on the burden himself when Bolvar appeared on the Frozen Throne, stopping him.

The former paladin had survived the Wrathgate but at a cost; his entire body had been seared by the flames of life from Alexstrasza. Through her power, he would forever endure in this world. Unable to face the world of the living anymore but unable to truly die, Bolvar knew he was the only one who could take up the mantle as lord of the Scourge. Despite reservations, Tirion placed the helmet on Bolvar's head and promised him that his sacrifice would not be forgotten - but Bolvar insisted that it must be, that he must be, if the world was ever to be free of fear. For the world to move on, it had to believe the Lich King was no more. Tirion agreed to the lie, leaving Bolvar as he was encased within the Frozen Throne, becoming the new Lich King.

A statue was built in the center of Dalaran, honoring the fallen and the triumph over the Lich King, but no one would ever know it was all a fabrication. Tirion had made perhaps the greatest gamble in history, and time would tell if it was the right call, but for now, Azeroth had achieved some semblance of peace, and was secure in the knowledge that no other conflict would be found in Northrend...

...wait, hmm...oh my god...WHAT'S THAT DRAGON DO?!

Sindy
We moved deeper into the Frostwing Halls, along the way successfully defending ourselves from an ambush by a force of undead nerubians and more Ymirjar. Just past the chamber was the terrace where the Frostbrood queen, Sindragosa, held court. The malevolent remains of Malygos's first consort patrolled the skies of the citadel while two of her lieutenants and a batch of her whelps kept watch over the terrace. After destroying the offspring we fought the frost wyrm lieutenants, Spinestalker and Rimefang, who had flown off after the defeat of Scourgelord Tyrannus back in the Pit of Saron.

As soon as they were both destroyed, Sindragosa made her appearance, roaring out of the sky and landing only a few yards away. Her fury was incredible, driven completely mad by the Lich King's control, and she would prove to be quite formidable. The fight started with basic attacks, but each time one of the melee hit her with a weapon, they gained a deadly chill that ravaged their bodies and increased in strength the more they attacked. Periodically Sindragosa used her magic to summon the raid right underneath her ribcage and then began to channel a devestating frost nova. We barely managed to run out in time.

The frost queen's greatest attack, however, came when she took to the air again. She hurled down some ice bolts that froze victims into solid spikes of ice, right before moving into a series of frost bombs that exploded across the entire terrace. We managed to use the spikes to block the damage as we worked to break our comrades free before they suffocated to death. In the final phase of her attack, Sindragosa began to cast a wild magic debuff that amplified her considerable damage. We fought a desperate battle of attrition to kill her before she killed us, and we won in the end.

The Emerald Bowl
With two wings down, we turned our attention to the Frostwing Halls, home of the frost wyrms and their broodmother, Sindragosa. Guarding the passageways were legions of Ymirjar soldiers under the command of a val'kyr called Sister Svalna. Crok Scourgebane, the Ebon Blade champion of the Argent Tournament, led a group of Ashen Verdict soldiers in helping us battle our way through the Ymirjar. However, by the time we reached Sister Svalna the Ashen Verdict members had been killed and risen into undeath behind us. Once she was defeated, we turned our attention to our fallen allies and gave them a clean death. Crok told us to proceed further in while he went back to make his report to Tirion Fordring and bring up more troops.

Inside the next room we found a green dragon named Valithria Dreamwalker being held captive by a group of liches. We moved in to help her break free, but the Lich King was watching and sent more Scourge minions to intercept us and kill the dragon for use later as a powerful frost wyrm. The only way we were going to get out of our predicament was to get Valithria healed enough to the point where she could break her own bonds and unleash her magic. The task would not be easy; liches, abominations, geists, skeletal mages and plague eruptors constantly streamed into the room, turning the situation into a kind of twisted football game.

Fortunantly, Valithria opened portals to a pocket of the Emerald Dream where clouds of energy floated; by harnessing this energy, our healers gained incredible power and helped speed up the process of restoring the dragon. The situation became almost unmanagable but we succeeded in healing Valithria to full, allowing her to break her magic bonds and unleash a burst of power that destroyed any remaining Scourge.
